Sketching & Painting The Outdoor Landscape, Saturday & Sunday, July 27 & 28, 2013, North Bennington, VT - Download Class Information and Registration Form here. This class is designed to ease you into the art and unique experience of painting “en plein air” – both the pleasures and the challenges. We’ll begin by learning to use our sketchbooks to record the impression of the landscape and to quickly capture changing light effects, since the changes in the intensity and quality of light during the course of a summer or autumn afternoon can be very dramatic. From there we’ll move on to more ambitious paintings of the plein air landscape. We’ll focus on the skills and techniques needed to and to make plein air paintings successful in varied conditions. Class Fee $185

This is an extended, three-day session of one of my most popular workshops! Wet-in-wet watercolor is one of the most basic and yet most beautiful techniques and produces a look that is impossible in any other medium. This class will teach you the basic techniques and how to use them to produce loose, flowing washes while still retaining control over shapes. As a bonus, the class will have the effect of loosening up the look of your paintings and give you confidence and courage in your watercolor work! Class Fee $275

This five week class is designed to ease you into the art of “plein air” painting. What exactly is plein air painting? “En plein air” is a French phrase meaning simply, “in the open air”. Landscape painters have long painted outdoors but painting in natural light became especially important to painters of the Barbizon School and others in mid-19th Century France. The tradition was learned by 19th century American painters including those of the Hudson River School. George Inness, a well-known and important American painter of the late 19th Century was influenced by both the Barbizon and Hudson River painters and adopted the habit of painting “en plein air”. The plein air painting tradition continued with other American painters in the early 20th century, particularly those of the realist movements. One of the most important of these was Edward Hopper who painted en plein air in both watercolor and oil. The work of both Inness and Hopper will be on exhibit at the Clark Art Institute during at the time of this class. Click here to download an information flyer.
