Oceans, bays, beaches and coastlines had been favorite subjects of mine when I was learning to paint as a teen. After a many years of painting landscapes almost exclusively, I rediscovered this old favorite during a vaction to Ogunquit, Maine in 2003. Since then, I have made it a point to make at least one trip to the the coast every year. Among my favorite places to paint is the Cape Anne area of Massachusetts, including Gloucester, Annisquam and Rockport.

“Off Rocky Neck”
This work was painted almost entirely on location on Rocky Neck in Gloucester, MA, The day was bright and hazy as it so often is at the oceanside. As it was low tide, this interesting rock formation was fully exposed and a striking contrast to the forested distant shore.

“York Reflections”
Both “York Reflections “, above, and “York Beach”, below, were painted in the studio from sketches and color studies made on site at York Beach, Maine. The morning of my sketch trip found the beach soaked from an overnight storm. In some places, the beach flowed with running water, in others it was simply damp. The contrast of the wet and damp reflective areas against the dryer sand was the inspiration for both of these works.

I always enjoy waterscapes. I especially admire your painting as it leads the eye through the rock and water. The detailed narrative of the process of painting is helpful. I check in more often than I reply.
