“Shadows on East Road” – 7″ x 11″
My painting spot was on a hill looking down on a snow-covered East Road in Shaftsbury, Vermont. Late afternoon sun cast long, blue tree shadows down the distant hill and onto the road, while also casting shadows on the ground toward me.
It’s always a challenge when the painting will have a great deal of brightly lit snow and deep, contrasting shadows. The contrast can often be too stark or not dramatic enough to carry the idea of bright sunlight. The other challenge in a scene like this is to moderate the blues – snow shadows often appear to be a brighter blue than they really are. In a painting, too-bright blue shadows will give a sense of the unreal or magical to the scene.
This painting has the right balance.
