“A Little Before Sunrise” – 7″ x 11″
Another morning on Harrington Road.
I suppose every artist has their own favorite painting locations. I work hard to find new locations and new scenes, but still have those that I return to over and over. Harrington Road in North Bennington, Vermont is one of those.
This viewpoint looks generally north along the spine of the Taconic range and toward Mt. Equinox.
This particular morning had clear skies and bright sun that could be felt but had not quite climbed over the Green Mountains as I set up to paint. I wanted to capture that moment when the landscape lies in warming shade just before rays of the sun actually strike the ground.
As in all winter scenes, there is lots of blue, brown and gray. But, on clear mornings, even before the sun rises over the mountain ridge, there is an infusion of warmth and warm color in just about all but the deepest gulleys. In this painting, light washes of cadmium red were layered over much of the paper that would stay white, or mostly white in the end.
