“Arrival Of The Greens” – 13″h x 14″w, watercolor on Arches 300 lb Hot Press Paper
This painting started as a demo for the Bethlehem Art Association regular meeting on March 15th, 2018.
I wanted the demo to focus on the idea that watercolor paints are best when they are used with a lot of water and allowed to have the freedom of fluidity. Also, it seemed that the audience would likely be interested in thinking about spring!
The concept began and ended with an unusually proportioned thumbnail sketch found in one of my sketchbooks. It is rare for me to work in a square format. This sketch – for unknown reasons – was composed as a square. It had never been turned into a painting. But, it seemed to offer possibilities for a light and airy early spring day with a long view into the distance.
A range of light values, bright yellow greens, an overall cool temperature and bright sunlight from high overhead conveys a sense that winter has finally disappeared but warmth has not yet completely arrived.
