“Beach Shadows” – 11″ x 15″, matted to 16″ x 20″ for easy, low cost framing
“Why do we love the sea? It is because it has some potent power to make us think things we like to think.” – Robert Henri
The calmest of oceans. I’ve written before about the Bass Rocks area of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Its rugged beach and changing surf make for endless painting possibilities.
Although the surf can be wild and rough, there are many times when it is surprisingly calm. The surface can almost have the appearance of a lake rather than an ocean. This scene is inspired by one of those times.
This painting is a composite scene rather than some actual place at Bass Rocks. I sketched similar scenes many years ago, when I first discovered the area. This particular composition has been used as the basis for a number of paintings, demonstrations and painting exercises in my classes & workshops.
When I visit this place on one of those calm ocean days, I also feel calm, relaxed and as contented as can be. This painting was intended to impart that same sense of calm.
