I suppose we all have our favorite places to paint. I certainly do, and the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts is one of them. It is a place that has been visited and painted by artists for many decades. There are many beautiful scenic areas with an enormous variety of subject matter.
One thing I like most is the rugged, rocky coastline. Almost everywhere that ocean meets land there are massive rock outcroppings that jut into, or rise up out of the see. And of all rocky spots, the Bass Rocks is perhaps the most stunning and dramatic. It is a mile and a half stretch of south facing rock studded coastline.
I paint here as often as I can – basically as often as I can manage to visit.
On this particular day, with the tide just beyond ebb, I was about as far out as one can go without being in the water. The eastward view presented itself with a nice contrast of moving water and solid rock. The underlying shapes are simple but rendering the moving water and the rugged forms of rock took a good bit of time and patience.
About 90% of the way in, a rapid change of light alerted me to the approach of a serious looking thunderhead. A quick pack up let me avoid being soaked (or lightning struck), but required the finishing touches be done in the studio.
