What is “en plein air”? En plein air is a French phrase meaning simply, “in open air”. During our workshop we’ll have the unique experience and wonderful inspiration that has captivated artists for hundreds of years.
My en plein air workshops focus on particular skills and techniques that help plein air paintings successful. Watercolor is a fast-working medium and is perfect for capturing fleeting impressions of light and landscape and we’ll learn to use our sketchbooks, recording impressions of the changing light and its effect on the landscape. This kind of work helps to identify our focus and theme and teaches us to simplify complex scenes. We’ll develop more ambitious paintings using both direct observation and using our compositional sketches. Each day will start with a quick instructor demonstration and end with a relaxed review of the our work.
