En Plein Air Painting In Watercolor

Learn the important fundamentals of painting outdoors,on location!

This workshop for anyone who wants to experience the pleasures and perils of “en plein air” landscape painting.

What you’ll learn:

This class will help you develop the several important skills for any plein air landscape painter:

  • The all-important skill of OBSERVATION
  • Focusing on important elements
  • Using the sketch to simplify and strengthen your composition
  • Using color and value creatively
  • Adapting to changing light and weather conditions

What is “en plein air”? En plein air is a French phrase meaning simply, “in open air”. During our workshop we’ll have the unique experience and wonderful inspiration that has captivated artists for hundreds of years.

We’ll focus on the particular skills and techniques that work in creating successful en plein air paintings.

Watercolor is a fast-working medium and is perfect for capturing fleeting impressions of light and landscape and we’ll learn to use our sketchbooks, recording impressions of the changing light and its effect on the landscape.

This kind of work helps to identify our focus and theme and teaches us to simplify complex scenes.  We’ll develop more ambitious paintings using both direct  observation and using our compositional sketches.

Each day will start with a quick instructor demonstration and end with a relaxed review of the our work.
