“Grey Morning, Backshore” – 11″ x 15″ watercolor on Arches 140lb Rough paper
Gloucester, Massachusetts has endless delights for the en plein air artist. But, my favorite spot is on the Bass Rocks – or the Backshore as it is also known. Surf flowing and crashing over and around a rocky coastline is an endless inspiration for me.
This scene was painted en plein air at a favorite backshore spot. Although it was June, the weather was chilly and misty – more like early spring. Capturing the cold feel and keeping the colors muted while capturing the look of an unsettled sea were the main goals. The distant rock is a resting place for cormorants – they are in always in residence.
