“Gray Morning Backshore” –11″ x 15″, $900

A chilly and foggy morning along the backshore of Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The open ocean with moving water is a favorite subject of mine. This seascape painting was done at a favorite location of mine as well.  I’ve sketch and painted views from this spot many times. One of the most interesting things about the scene is the distant rock which seems to be home to a colony of cormorants. They occupy the rock all the time in all weather.

The real challenge for this painting was in depicting the cool weather along with the fog and mist while still bringing substance to both the water and the rocks.

The painting was completed with a vary limited palette of three colors: Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet, Cobalt Blue, and Raw Sienna.

This combination results in vibrant neutrals that create a gray scene without seeming oppresive.

A constant challenge in painting open ocean water is in creating a sense of consistent movement and rhythm as well as just the right amount of reflection and sparkle.
