“Gulley In The Woods” – 7″ x 11″

Gulley In The Woods - en plein air watercolor landscape painting of winter by Tony ConnerThe light in winter is always low and only seems to touch a few places in the woods.  Low places, like gullies, seem to sit in perpetual shade during winter.

This scene is off of McCullough Road in North Bennington, Vermont.  This low area sits on the east side of the road, and in late afternoon, the sunlight barely touches most of the ground.

This painting is done on Fabriano Artistico hot press paper. It is a very smooth surface with low absorbency. Color and washes flow around on the surface, and color, when dry sits on the surface as well. It is a great surface for calligraphic marks and for building layers of color and value.

There is a very minimal drawing of the scene. Mostly I wanted this painting to be created with color, value and especially brushwork and brush marks.
