“Holy Smoke Road” – Watercolor Plein Air Landscape Painting
Early Spring Landscape Without Drama
Although spring has arrived and temperatures have moderated, it is still early in the season and there is still contrast between those things that seem more related to winter and those related to spring.
In this case, the sunlight was somewhat diminished by some overcast making the light weak – similar to winter time.
The road running through the shadows and back out into the light was initial what made me stop to paint. The subtle light and shadow effects on the trees to the left ended up as important elements in telling the story of the day.
As the painting worked toward conclusion, I realized the trees seemed to be reaching across the road toward each other – an element that went un-noticed initially.
