“Low Land” – 7″ x 11″
A cold but sunny winter afternoon. In warmer months, this area is actually a swamp. A recent arctic cold has frozen just about everything and covered it all with foot of snow. So the swamp looks like a flat field at this point.
Just out of the scene to the left is a densely wooded hillside – a bit of it can be seen coming in from the left margin of the painting. The trees and woods on the hill were filtering most of the bright sunlight, leaving most of the landscape in blue shadow. Those few streak sof bright sun, lighting up the flat ground became the reason to paint this scene.
