My first “en plein air” landscape painting of 2017, and the beginning of a new series of winter landscape paintings. Marsh and Snow - watercolor en plein air landscape by Tony Conner

I’m not really a winter person and would rather spend the cold months hibernating indoors.  Yet the winter landscape offers a variety of looks and the opportunity to create paintings that stand on the strength of their value compositions. This is particularly true when the landscape is snowy but not covered in snow.  In those times when patches of leftover weeds and grasses poke through the snow cover, it is possible to find ready made value compositions.

This painting is just one of those. Painted at a favorite location, Miller’s Pond, off Old Depot Road near Arlington, Vermont.  The surface of the pond and the marsh were both frozen, and a light cover of snow lay on the ice. Stalks of tall grasses and weeds stood up from the banks, while the leftover stalks of cattails poked through the frozen surface.

The combination of snow cover and weeds created a rhythmic pattern of darks and lights dancing through the landscape.
