- Construction – think of this as your initial drawing, created using effective design and composition ideas to create focus, movement, space and distance.
- Composition – this is the most critical step in the painting process. The ideas are easy to understand, the mental challenge is difficult.
- Color – simplified color schemes and a practical approach to color theory reveal light and form, create mood, and enhance unity and harmony
SEMINAR STYLE APPROACH TO ENHANCE LEARNING AND RETENTION
This course is built on an expanded schedule that allows time for individual work and one-on-one coaching/critique sessions. See schedule below
Pre-Class Work – about a month before the first online session, you’ll receive an email with instructions on the pre-class exercises. These will include written background material with ideas and principles to use in constructing/drawing layouts for continued work and exploration throughout the seminar. In addition, there are a couple assignments that will begin your journey into value and color.
Class 1 – July 10th: This session will mostly be instructor demos, illustrating practical use of the ideas for constructing the layout. Pre-class work for Individual sessions will be assigned during this class.
Individual Sessions 1 – Week of July 17th : Individual sessions are one hour long, one-on-one zoom meetings. This one is two review/critique your layouts and discuss possible improvements.
Class 2 – July 31st: This session is mostly instructor demos, illustrating ideas for simple value compositions. Pre-class work for Class 3 will be assigned during this class and will include more color work exercises. Becoming successful at creating dynamic and effective value compositions requires a change in your thinking. This is a major challenge for most people.
Class 3 – August 21st: This session starts with participants sharing pre-class value composition projects followed by instructor demos on more complex value composition ideas. Pre-class work for Individual sessions will be assigned.
Individual Sessions 2 – Week of August 28th : In this session we’ll review/critique assigned value composition exercises. Additional color work exercises will be assigned.
Class 4 – September 11th: Participants will present value compositions for group review.
Class 5 – October 2nd: This class starts with a review of color exercises and instructor demos on creating color studies that retain values as designed in earlier value studies. Demos and discussion will include ideas on color choices and color schemes. This process, again, requires a major change in thinking, and is also a major challenge. Pre-class work for the next Class will be assigned.
Class 6 – October 23rd: Class starts with a review of individual pre-class work and continues with demos and discussions on creating a “real” painting using value and color studies for reference and guidance. Pre-work for the next individual sessions will be assigned.
Individual Sessions 3 – Week of October 30th : In this session we’ll review/critique value compositions, color studies and the paintings created from them. Specific guidance on improvements will be offered.
Class 7 – November 13th: In this class, everyone will present the entire body of work created in the Seminar.
