EXPLORE HOW COLOR AFFECTS LIGHT AND MOOD LATE IN THE DAY

This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn about evening light, paint en plein air or learn about color.  Recommended for those with at least some watercolor painting experience.

What you’ll learn in this workshop:

The class is a combination en plein air  and studio painting class. We’ll explore important aspects of color – value, intensity, and temperature – and how they affect our sense of light and mood in the evening landscape.

The first half of class will be spent outdoors, creating sketches of the landscape in evening light. In this part of class we’ll be sketching interesting subjects and light effects. The light changes rapidly this time of the day, so we’ll practice working quickly in our sketchbooks in an effort to capture impression rather than information. Along the way, you’ll learn to sketch with confidence.

The second half of class will be in conducted in the studio. During this part of class, we’ll select a sketch from the evening’s work and explore ways to enhance light and mood with contrasts – light vs dark, bright vs dull, and warm vs cool. Embedded in our studio work is a “mini-course” on the characteristics of color and how they can be manipulated for effect.

I have learned more in this two-day workshop, than in all other watercolor classes I’ve taken” - Rita S. , MA

" Thought there was a perfect balance between theory & practice.  The points you wanted to stress were given clearly & concisely.  You are so passionate about your work.  I have come home energized & enthusiastic - which is exactly what I wanted from the workshop.  " - S. H., Saline, MI

"I've taken several watercolor workshops, some taught by prominent and well known artists. Tony's workshop was by far the best in its quality, approach, and teaching style. The small class format facilitated learning." - J. C., Setauket, NY
