When the landscape is deep with snow, seek out moving water.
It’s a mantra I frequently follow when seeking subjects for winter paintings. Frigid air has kept the ground snow-covered since a storm last week. At this time of year, moving water often looks very dark compared to the snow on the ground around it. The contrast works nicely for visual impact and creating an easily defined center of interest.
In addition, and similar to the painting “Fallen Tree Over Frozen Stream”, there are lots of great subtle color, temperature and intensity contrasts to be included for vibrancy and interest.
