This is the first in a series focused on contrasts of light, color, temperature and intensity that occurs at the end of day. This painting was done in the studio. Like much of my studio work, it was executed quickly and almost totally done with the wet-into-wet technique.
Sunsets are times of transition. Light fades quickly and the change in color in the landscape is fast and dramatic. Sunset at anytime of the year shows this effect, but it is particularly evident in the summer landscape. Despite the warm temperatures, the summer landscape is actually full of cool color – greens cover the landscape and blue colors the sky. At sunset, the sky often takes on warm yellows, oranges and reds, while cool greens change to even cooler blues and violets.
The visual effect is both dramatic and fleeting.
This painting captures that moment where we sense the world changing from day to night.
