"Repair & Refit" - watercolor painting by Vermont artist Tony Conner

“Repair & Refit”

Manchester-by-the-Sea is a beautiful and quaint village along the coast of Cape Ann. It is both picturesque and paint-able.

Surprising, I guess, that I cho0se subjects that are not so quaint.  “Repair & Refit” is a painting of a sailer, up on the blocks for repair in the yard at Manchester Marine Corporation.

This was painted in the afternoon with light coming from high in the sky.  I liked the look and feel of this large boat being supported by relatively small, by comparison, metal stands.  The top-lighting was also casting a sliver of a shadow under the boat – another attraction of the scene.  Some small puddles of water reflected color from the subject boat and, conveniently, worked well as integrating elements in the painting composition.

While most sailors prefer boats painted in the water – either moored and at rest or out on the water, sails unfurled and moving.

I have a penchant for boats that are out of the water – where the beauty of the compound curves on their hulls are apparent.  When they are out of the water, it usually means work is being done, which suggests another kind of activity.

This painting measures 10 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ and is mounted and matted to 16″ x 20″ for easy, low-cost framing.
