“Sheep Hill Afternoon” – 8″ x 8″
You might say this one appeared “out of the blue” – the blue sky. While setting up for some en plein air painting at Sheep Hill Farm in Williamstown, Massachusetts on a hot June afernoon, the clouds boiled and rolled as a summer storm blew in.
One of the great things about watercolor paint is the fluidity that allows one to capture movement with both grace and impact. Summer thunderstorms spill out of towering clouds that build like clouds of steam. Every painting captures and freezes a moment in time, as does this one. But the action of the watercolor medium helps us sense the movement in the clouds that overbear the farm and surrounding landscape.
I also hoped to capture a sense of looking up by showing only the upper parts of the buildings and their roofs along with the slope of the tall distant hill.
Painting is 8″ x 8″, watercolor on 90lb Bee Paper.
