“Starboard Side ” – 7″ x 11″, This painting is available

Painting as drawing. Starboard Side - en plein air watercolor seascape nautical painting by Tony Conner

Usually, I put a light pencil drawing down on paper before painting. For this one, I went right to the brush.

This work was done late in the day on Sunday, October 8th – the first day of Cape Ann Plein Air 2017.  On sitting down to paint, there was little over an hour until I had to be someplace else – so it had to be a quick job!

The scene is at the Gloucester Marine Railway drydock. The ship in drydock is the beautiful, and famous “Lynx – America’ Privateer“. The Lynx would have been a great subject, but in the moment, my thoughts were captivated by the late afternoon light on the the structure of the drydock work scaffold, the design possibilities simplified, integrated shapes and a limited color palette.
