What a difference a day makes!

Three Fields - en plein air watercolor painting by Tony ConnerYesterday’s painting “Crossroads” was done on a moderately sunny day in an early winter that had not seemed very winter-like.

All that changed last night as the first winter storm of the  season arrived.  It didn’t leave much snow.  But, unlike yesterday, there is no confusion about what season it is now.

It was tempting to go back and re-paint the same scene as yesterday, just to show the stark difference in 24 hours time. I did, in fact, go back to the same spot, but chose to paint a scene to the right of the one painted yesterday.  The rhythm of gently rolling fields along with the alternating patches of leftover stubble against the snow seemed like a good, simple and expressive subject.

The “winter palette” is mentioned in many other posts. Basically it is a limited palette of colors that work well to depict the grays and browns of winter but with underlying color notes.  It includes three blues – ultramarine, cobalt and cerulean, three reds – cadmium red deep, permanent alizarin crimson, and quinacridone burnt scarlett, along with two earth tones – burnt and raw siena. This set of color works well together, especially in creating the neutrals that are all-important in the winter scene.
