The Mile Around Woods is essentially a public land maintained by a private foundation in North Bennington, Vermont. A popular hiking trail passes in and through the woods. This painting shows the entrance to the trail on a sunny winter day. On this day, there was very little snow on the ground, except in the areas that don’t get sunlight. I was attracted to the long, gentle shadows that stretched across the rolling fields.
Most winter landscapes in Vermont will have an abundance of snow. This winter started out very cold and snowy, but moderated in January, so that there is little snow on the ground at this point. There is still a green cast to some of the grass which adds an unexpected touch of color to what could be a bit of a drab landscape.
This painting currently on exhibit at The Skinny Pancake, 60 Lake St. Burlington, VT 05401
