Watercolor Studio Online

May 11, 2020

Good news! Hardly any pre-class work this week!

We’re going to start working with and thinking about another of the four characteristics of color – Chroma. And we’ll shift our focus back to shape composition a bit .

Pre-class: Assignment:

1) download this landscape scene – https://tonyconner.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/AerialP_layout.pdf and make two copies on watercolor paper. The layout is about 7×11 but your version can be smaller.
2) Download and print these two images: https://tonyconner.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/img831-scaled.jpg and
3) draw one copy of the composition you have been working on these past several classes on watercolor paper

AERIAL PERSPECTIVE: The first thing we’ll do in class is use the aerial perspective as a way to ease into the concept of CHROMA. We’ve covered Chroma before but we’ll be using it in a practical way with aerial perspective. Depicting 3D space in on a 2D surface can be accomplished with many tools and techniques. It can be done effectively with changes in value, temperature and chroma. We’ll explore that on our small landscape scene from the downloads in step 1).

COMPOSITION: Next, I’ll want to focus on composition. We’ll take a look a the two images you downloaded in step 2) of the pre-class work. These are two versions of the same scene. You’ll notice that the buildings on the left have been change in both placement and scale. Why? We’ll talk about that during class.
I’ll also be reviewing one of your classmates works with an eye toward strengthening the composition.

Lastly, if we have time, I’ll want you to paint another version of the scene you have been working on in class these past several weeks. You’ll have the freedom to paint it any way you like. But, I’ll want you to use a thoughtful approach to the painting – planning composition, value and color for effect. If need be, we’ll hold this until the following week.
