En Plein Air Drama in the Late Winter Landscape

“Winter Warmth” – 7″ x 11″

Winter Warmth - en plein air watercolor winter landscape painting by Tony ConnerIt was a cold morning but it wasn’t apparent in the clear sky and bright sun on this February morning.

Even in the colder northern climates, by the middle of February, the sun is bright and strong even if it’s not reflected on the thermometer.  It has been a fairly snowy winter and I’ve gotten used to painting the patterns of fields with snow cover.  A recent bout  of mild weather has melted most all of the snow and left barren brown fields in its place.  The un-relenting neutral color of the landscape make it difficult to find subjects with the kind of subtle light effect that appeal to me.

I was out early enough on this particular morning as the sun peeked over the eastern mountains. It lit up this scene and provided great contrasts of both color and temperature.

Not subtle, but very eye catching!
