Carpenter Hill Road, Winter

This is a scene from a familiar spot that captivates me every time I pass through. Vermont. One approaches this spot when driving south on Carpenter Hill Road in Bennington, just below the crest of the hill. In winter, it is often slippery with ice, water and snow. As you ascend the road and in the right conditions, there is a point at which seems to be completely reflective. This painting tries to capture that moment, place and time.

Carpenter Hill Road, Winter - watercolor landscape painting by Tony Conner

Although this is a winter scene, I have sketched it many times and in different seasons. The point-of-view in this scene is just below the crest where the road is bordered by thick forest on both sides of the road. The road and landscape opens just at the crest offering a great sense of movement from shadow to light and appears in all seasons. It is this sensation that I find so compelling and what brings me back to paint it over and over.
