“Light Day, North Coast”
There are many reasons that the ocean is a source of facination and inspiration. One of them is the limited range of low-intensity hues - blues, greens, browns and grays - that dominate most seascape scenes.
Working with colors that are limited in hue and intensity range requires a sensitive approach to value and temperature shifts if light and form are to be well represented. This scene combines those challenges with an attempt to re-do another painting that went wrong in both composition and handling of value.
Original attempt.
The original composition suffered from weight imbalance, partially due to the weight of dark values. This painting uses the same scene but balances shapes and manages a better distribution of values across the picture plane.
The location 'generic' represent some spot that could be anywhere along the rugged coast of New England.
