This painting was done when seasons overlap late in the fall. In this scene, leaves were down and trees bare, but the grass was still late summer green.
It’s an odd mixture of symbols that represent two different seasons. It was tempting to change the green fields to a hue that would better represent autumn. But, one of the attractive things about the subject were the long, dark green shadows from the low late afternoon light.
